Ecotrust Canada is delighted to announce that Ian Gill, long-time President, has become founding Chief Executive Officer of Ecotrust Australia, commencing July 1, 2010.

The organization simultaneously announces the appointment of Brenda Kuecks as Executive Director of Ecotrust Canada.

“This is a watershed moment in the history of the Ecotrust family,” said Jacqueline Koerner, Chair of Ecotrust Canada. “We are delighted that Australia identified our organization’s approach as valuable and that Ian has agreed to lead the start-up of Ecotrust in his home country, where opportunities for Indigenous communities and the environment strongly echo experience in our corner of the Pacific.”

“For 15 years, the success of Ecotrust Canada has been tied to Ian Gill’s leadership and entrepreneurship,” said Spencer Beebe, founder and President of Ecotrust in Portland, Oregon. “Not only has Ecotrust Canada put the conservation economy on the map, it has played a key role in the emergence of BC organizations that work on balancing social, economic, and environmental goals. With the launch of Ecotrust Australia, we are now supporting a global network of related initiatives.”

Ecotrust Australia will be based in Sydney, chaired by noted Indigenous leader Patrick Dodson, and will work primarily in the Australian north.

At Ecotrust Canada, the succession moves to Brenda Kuecks, who for seven years has been a well-trusted and dynamic senior figure within the organization. She is a recipient of the BC Community Achievement Award, and brings more than twenty years of experience in rural community and economic development. “Under Brenda's leadership, we can expect new and innovative partnerships that will foster reliable prosperity on our coast,” said Koerner.

As Brenda reflects: “It is an honor to step into the leadership of such a dynamic organization. Ecotrust Canada performs a vital role in building the conservation economy in BC. Our intent is to remain a leader in the field and continue testing new economic approaches through initiatives in the fisheries, forestry, energy, and knowledge and planning sectors.”
